DOWNLOADABLE Tarot Guidebook by Kelsey Dusenka

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.46.52 PM

First of all it's been hard to hold this back until now, but since the last full day for the Tarot, Mystics and the Occult show was tonight, we wanted to celebrate by releasing something special.

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.04 PM

Kelsey Dusenka, our intern over the summer, put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into designing a comprehensive downloadable guide to the Light Grey Tarot. She's an incredibly talented designer and a wonderful person, and we were really lucky to have her join us for the short three months this summer.

Download the 40 page PDF here!

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.14 PM

She even worked right up to the show opening date to put the finishing touches on it.
It's got a section on the meaning of numbers, several different ways to read spreads, a great comprehensive list of meanings and symbols, and a ton of other great stuff.

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.24 PM

And it's all for you.

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.38 PM

Please help us say a HUGE 'thank you' to Kelsey for all of her hard work in putting this together! She's fantastic!

The Girls Books Have Arrived!

GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition Book.

Right now, I'm sitting in front of a shelf recently stocked with our shipment of Girls: Fact & Fiction art books. They're beautiful! Once again, we're floored by the illustrations the artists have created of their chosen ladies–perhaps you've seen some of the sneak previews they've been sharing around the internet. But I'd like to take a moment to talk about the physical books themselves. They're really nice! Every once and awhile I just want to pick one up and flip through it!

GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition Book.

The book itself is completely filled with imagery and is a fun read. Here are a couple quick pictures of some of the spreads inside. It's double-sided, so on one side of the book you'll see the Factual Ladies, and on the other side the Fictional Ladies.

GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition Book.

The books will be available for purchase during the Girls show, or you can order online.

It's an 80 page, soft-cover art book and we're super proud of how amazing the show is. We can't wait to reveal all 109 pieces next Friday!

GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition Book.

GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition Book.

If you're in the Minneapolis area you can pick one up at the gallery on the night of the opening for the GIRLS: Fact + Fiction show anytime after December 7th!

A while back we had Ollie Stench visit Light Grey Art Lab and give a lecture called Ollie Stench Talks About Punk Rock. It was a great conversation about how he personally defines Punk Rock as a movement, the culture and worldview that created it, and how it has changed the world since.

I've embedded a youtube video you can play in your browser, or there's a direct link to an MP3 incase you'd prefer to listen on the go! Download! (right click to save)

Over the past few months I have been working on learning how to read the Light Grey Tarot. Although it was a daunting task at first, this has been a very rewarding and fun process. It has given me new perspective on what Tarot can be and how it can be used for rethinking scenarios. Below I have read one of our interns fate. Oh man, my first public tarot reading:

blogpost_anafternoonreading

Question: What is the nature of upcoming (over the holiday) family interactions?

Reading

IV of Wands by Emma Trithart

X of Wands by Roxy Polk

VI of Swords by Courtney Cashon

Right away, I notice that you have two wands in your reading. The wands suit signifies creativity, spontaneity, quick pace, and social interactions. It is a suit of quick pursuit, moments of inspirations, and new found excitement. You also have one card from the sword suit, which is representative of intelligence, calculated and thoughtful behavior, and mind over heart. This is the most powerful and dangerous of all the suits, embodying power, which comes with all the negative feelings of self-doubt, inner turmoil, and troubled decisions.

The first card in your reading is the IV of Wands. It is in the upright position, and is a card of union, togetherness, friendship, and bliss. The two figures are holding raised hands, bouquets of flowers, and are placed below a blossoming wreath. In relation to family this card is a celebration of togetherness and a reminder of all of those important people in your life. It serves as a message of good time, memories, and keeping in mind the importance family and friends.

The second card in your reading is the X of Wands. This card illustrates a person who has good intentions and is incredibly motivated, but has allowed all of their projects, ideas, work, and responsibilities to create a heavy and great burden. They are clearly struggling and having a hard time dealing will all of the sticks they have chosen picked up. This card, since it is in the reverse position, is a reminder to take tasks and responsibilities into consideration. Although you have many skills and talents, taking on too many is detrimental to your health, relationships, and future endeavors- you cannot move forward with such a troubling load. As you reunite with your family over the next few weeks, I urge you to consider what is important and what is worth sacrificing in order to grow as a person and with others.

The third card in your reading is the VI of Swords. This card in it’s suit takes place after a struggle amongst friends and colleges- you have won a battle, but your relationships are suffering. In the VI however, this is after the storm. She is peacefully and reflectively looking inward, her swords are balanced, perfectly vertical, and still, and she is in a place of transition. Usually water represents forward movement, progression, new perspective, and an upcoming journey, and in this case, represents a slow process of healing, positivity, and finding balance.

Looking at your cards together, we can see that you have a wonderful family and support system. You know that they are there for you, even through rough patches and difficulties with specific relationships. Going into the next few weeks, I am going to remind you to take all of your priorities into consideration and decide what you can carry with you on this journey and what you need to leave behind in order to make room for family, friends, and yourself. Currently and in the future, remember through the rocky times to reflect, shed unnecessary baggage, and remind yourself of your strengths, goals, and support system. Take full advantage of the time you have with them and the new found time for yourself.

CALL FOR ART: Message in a bottle

MessageinaBottle_CallforArtPost_sm

You're walking down the beach for some much needed 'you' time. The sun is setting and you're really enjoying the serenity of the sounds and smells of the beach.

And then you trip.

Over a bottle.

***

( Did you like that? I'm obviously cut out to be a professional writer. )

We're really excited about our new call for art! Are you interested in joining us as one of the artists for our next exhibition? Submit your name, email and portfolio link in the comments below by Thursday November 22.

Message in a Bottle is an exhibition focusing on little secrets, special things, hidden treasures and mysterious messages.

From mid January through mid February Light Grey Art Lab transforms into one giant decoder ring / spyglass / Rosetta stone / Pandora's box / Mad Magazine fold-in. What does that mean? It means we want everyone to look a little harder at the details. Is there something secret in the art? We hope so.

With the Message in a Bottle Exhibition on the walls as the perfect backdrop, we will be dedicating workshops, lectures and events around the topic of Secrets, Codes, Mysteries and things of that nature!

We are looking for approximately 40 or so artists that are interesting in making viewers covet the details, look for hidden compartments, find secret messages, decipher codes and really spend time looking through the work for inconspicuous elements. Do you have the ability to create something cryptic? If so, we want to hear from you!

If you think you'd be a good fit for our upcoming show, put your name, email and a link to your portfolio below by Thursday NOVEMBER 22.

The work for this show will be featured as prints in our gallery and the work will be showcased online for everyone to view and take part in the fun! We're hoping to have a range sizes, styles and interpretations. More details about size limitations, deadlines and other important information will be emailed out to the selected artists the week of the 26th, and we'll be sure to post the names of the contributors here!

***

Also - For those of you that like to plan a little bit out - the deadline for final artwork will be January 3rd, so please keep that in mind when submitting!

More details on the final exhibition dates will be posted soon! Until then, show us what you've got!

Questions? Please send me a note at hello(at)lightgreyartlab.com

You'll definitely want to attend the opening reception, as in addition to food, drink, music and art, we'll be giving away some some artwork form the show as well copies of the Girls: Fact + Fiction book!

Sneak Peek: GIRLS: Fact + Fiction book!

LightGrey_GirlsBook_04
Amazing FACT cover art by Luisa Uribe (Beatrix Potter)

WOO!

Ooooooo guess what! We got the printer's proof in the mail this last week and we practically fell over and rolled around on the floor with excitement!

Okay, we DID roll around on the floor. Well. I rolled around on the floor.

I wanted to share a sneak peek of what's in store for everyone!
The book is in production right now and we're waiting patiently for it to arrive to accompany the 100+ pieces of amazing art that will grace our walls for the
GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition reception on Friday, December 7th, from 7 - 10pm.

LightGrey_GirlsBook_03
You can see a sliver of Rebecca Green's 'Millicent' peeking out from the pages.

Let me tell you, it's crazy hard to sit tight as we go back and forth with the printer.
I can't believe that the show is almost here.

LightGrey_GirlsBook_01
Just a small clip of Kyle Fewell's 'Noriko' and Sam Wolfe Connely's "Candy"

You guys are in store for an insanely exciting show. Both rooms will be packed with art and we've got enough ladies featured to make your head spin. Who knows. You might even come out of there with a couple dozen more ladies (and artists) to crush on.

LightGrey_GirlsBook_02
A little bit of Manuel Kilger's 'Samus Aran'

That, and we'll make it easy for you guys to keep up with what these artists are doing. The book itself is reversible -- so one side is the Fact side, and when you flip it over, you're looking at the Fiction side! So, when you meet in the middle, you get to see the long and exciting list of everyone involved, as well as their sites so you can check out the rest of their work!

LightGrey_GirlsBook_05
A full and comprehensive artist list featuring everyone's sites so you can go take a look at these great artists's other projects

The whole thing has so much content in it -- stories about the artists, the subjects, some history, facts and really fun art. It's definitely a great read as well as a nice book to look at.

LightGrey_GirlsBook_07

So! If you didn't know about it - we're still taking pre-orders of the book up until the show itself. If you'd like to order one for the holidays, now's the time!
We promise to ship it out before December 10th for anyone that claims one before the reception.

Andres Guzman! (And all of the things that make him special!)

corpse_typography

Over the past few months we have held several classes, such as Handmade Typography, Portraiture in Ink, and Character and Concept, taught by an important member of our Light Grey Art Lab faculty. We would like to take this time to introduce and celebrate Andres Guzman as an amazing teacher and as a local illustrator and typography artist.

skysthelimit_flat_andres_guzman_illustration_pixi_magazine

Andres Guzman is originally from Lima, Peru, and spend a majority of his childhood in Denver, Colorado. A few years ago he graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a major in Illustration with an interest in Graphic Design. Since graduating, his has been creating art as a full time freelance illustrator, under the art collective Steak Mob, working for companies such as Wired Magazine, Mountain Dew, Nickelodeon, and Vice Magazine, just to name a few. He has also been published in Front Magazine, Thrasher Magazine, The Washington Square Review, and Vitamn. He is extremely versed in concept and client based work, creative teaching, and multimedia projects.

As a freelance illustrator, Andres is constantly at work. Sometimes, spending an entire day learning how to perfect an ear, an arm, or a letter, always trying to improve his craft and versatility; His severe focus and passion for the creative process, and his love for form, type, and illustration has pushed him to where he is today.

andres_guzman_steakmob_moleskine_doodle_sketch_drawing_ink_characters_typography_lettering

" I try not to limit myself by any specific visual style as I believe there are too many beautiful methods and processes in the world of art to just settle on one."- Andres

As a teacher, Andres is extremely engaging. He sets the tone for his classes by playing relaxing music, talking about technique, and working by your side on his own illustrations. The entire class is about making, process, practice, hands-on type, and great conversation.

Although most of his classes are primarily studio and work time, he does a great job of sharing inspiring images, techniques for specific materials, and drawing demonstrations that make character and type look incredibly easy.

As a coordinator and student of Andres', I appreciate his organic classroom style, throwing structure out the window, and reacting one on one to students needs, interests, questions, and styles. It is great to be surrounded by someone so skillful and personable.

word_is_bond_andres_guzman_moonraker_typography

Thank you, Andres, for inspiring all of us to work harder.

This upcoming Sunday, November 18th from 12:30 to 3pm, Andres is teaching our second Handmade typography class. Using traditional ink and brush materials, this class in intended to push the envelope for creative design and typography. He will lead you though the basics of type, and catch everyone one up to developing letter forms, both though form and play. This class will delve further into type, and is a class appropriate for all skill levels and disciplines. I encourage you to all come and meet Andres, and experience his teaching style and all of his great type advice. This class costs $25.00 per person, or $20.00 each with a friend.

Make my Holiday : A Good Old Fashioned Art Swap!

MakeMyHoliday
Light Grey is coordinating a good old fashioned art swap for the holidays!

UPDATE! 11/16/12-- Thanks to everyone that submitted to be part of the swap! We're going to be announcing your pairs in a moment! The submissions are now closed! Watch for the list momentarily!

EDIT: YES! THIS IS DEFINITELY OPEN TO ALL INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS

Do you want to give and receive something really super-special in the mail for the holidays? Would you like to make a great art friend in the process?

Leave a comment with your name and email below before Thursday November 15th and we'll pair you up another awesome creative person for (what we hope) will be a very memorable gift exchange!

Here's how it'll work:
Once everyone's names are added below, Jenny and I will pair people at random and publish a new list on Friday November 16th that has everyone accounted for. Then, all you have to do is find your person on the list, request their postal-mail address, and make something to send them via postal mail by Friday, December 7th!

Easy! And fun!

There are only a couple rules to participate.

1. PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP IF YOU CAN PROMISE TO FOLLOW THROUGH. (I can't stress this enough!)

2. The thing you send has to be made by you. It doesn't matter when you made it, how you made it, why you made it, or where you made it. Size doesn't matter. Shape doesn't matter. As long as you did it, that's perfect!

3. Once you're paired, it'll be up to you to request your partner's postal address.

4. Please be sure to send your packages out by Friday December 7th so everyone receives their packages before the holidays are over!

5. (Optional, but we would love you forever) Once you receive your package, please send us a photo of you with what you got from your swap-friend! We'd love to hear form you and we'd love to post a public thank you / show and tell from everyone involved over the weeks people receive things! We'll post a batch every week as long as we are getting photos!

*** Seriously, everyone. It has been so amazing getting to know you guys over the last eight months (whether that was through a show, class, online or otherwise). It's been great seeing everyone talk with each other and get to know one another by collaborating. Here's to some local-to-long distance hugs. From us to you. Help us make this art swap a big, awesome, happy success. :) Here's to the holidays and a happy new year!

xoxo
