Tarot, Mystics & The Occult Opening Recap

Tarot, Mystics & the Occult Opening Reception

Thanks to everyone who attended the opening reception of Tarot, Mystics & the Occult! Everyone was in festive supernatural spirits and eager to finally get their hands on their own copy of The Light Grey Tarot!

Tarot, Mystics & the Occult Opening Reception

Besides a packed gallery of amazing art celebrating all things mystical, we had two professional readers, Corrine Kenner and Chuck Boe, present all night to give personalized tarot readings to our more adventurous guests. There was an air of mystery and anticipation hanging over the line of folks waiting to see what the cards had in store for them!

In all it was a magical night! The crowd soaked in the 78 cards hung on the way (with the meanings and interpretations posted right alongside), and several free raffles of art, crystals, copies of the Light Grey Tarot deck and free passes to upcoming Light Grey Art Lab workshops throughout the night. Many of the artists themselves made the trek to be present, so it was fun to meet in person and finally put faces to many of the names!

KaliCiesemier_2013ResolvetoMAKE_revisedblog

We can't contain it any longer! Not only are we in the midst of a frenzy of shows, projects and upcoming exhibition ideas -- but we have the best news ever!

We're serious and we're excited! You know those New Years resolutions to do more, get better, collaborate and get stuff done? Well, this is our answer to making those come true!

Awesome illustrator, Kali Ciesemier, is coming to Light Grey to head up a two and a half day intensive workshop for a group of motivated, excited artists, January 4 - 6th at Light Grey Art Lab! She's excited, ready and has a ton of great things planned for everyone to conquer in the first couple days of 2013!!

This workshop is open to anyone interested in coming to Minneapolis for this creative retreat, so we'll be offering accommodations for those of you excited to visit us!

You'll learn all about her process, she'll guide you through one-on-one creative sessions, lead everyone in in-depth and frank discussion about the world of illustration, mediate discussions with a half dozen visiting guest speakers from the industry and share a lot of advice on the world of illustration.

As part of the workshop, Kali's got big plans for an in-studio creative project that will challenge you to one-up yourselves! We're so excited about her project that we've even saved a section of our gallery to showcase the work from MAKE:2013!!

And finally, smack in the middle of it all, we'll throw a big party for all of the creatives in the Twin Cities and host our second ever - ALL ILLUSTRATORS Meet & Greet!

So! Now you know why we're so excited! Please help us spread the word and tell your friends that have been waiting to kick it into high gear! We're ready for them!

All of the specifics, schedules and details are here! Thanks, Kali! We're so excited!

Our Cards + Our Fate!

DailyReading_Tarot_LightGrey_FB_Blog

So we at Light Grey did a little experiment today to see what kind of reading would come from the combination of cards we drew! Just to see what the message of our combined cards might be. The result wasn't all that surprising!

(Left to Right we have Chris Hajny's 10 of Swords, Lindsay Nohl's Ace of Swords, Jenny Bookler's 3 of Pentacles and Francesca Buchko's Queen of Wands)

So, for this combination of cards, one would receive a reading like this: (courtesy of Francesca's interpretation)

These cards together indicate a work challenge, specifically dealing with an intellectual pursuit. Though the work is overwhelming at times and and often seems inescapable, a new endeavor will be discovered from this work and it will be socially rewarding, provided the querent stays true to his or her steady and regular work pace and maintains an upbeat attitude.

Pretty telling, isn't it? :) For those of you that know us, we're always working, sometimes a little too much! But it's all for a good cause and we enjoy it. Even when it's overwhelming!

Between getting everything ready for Light Grey and our design work for Paper Bicycle, it's funny to see the meanings of this spread of cards! Ha!
I guess our fate is sealed!

Well, with that said, let's see what the cards have in store for you.

Don't forget to come down and say hi to us at the opening reception this Friday!
It'll be from 7 - 10pm at Light Grey with lots of food, drinks and professional Tarot readers :) Not to mention all of the great artwork!

Plus, the donation based "learn to read the Light Grey Tarot" workshop the following day (Oct 27 from 1 - 2:30pm) where we'll show you how to use them!

See you soon!

GIRLS: Fact + Fiction Exhibition Book. Headed to press!

GirlsbookMockupFORWEB_SM

The artwork is all in and the book is off to press! Awesome cover artwork by Peony Yip (Wednesday Addams / FICTION) and Luisa Uribe (Beatrix Potter / FACT).

The GIRLS: Fact + Fiction exhibition artwork is all in and we are getting ready for the upcoming show and reception on December 7th!
Getting all of the artwork in was no small feat. Everyone came through with flying colors and now we are impatiently waiting for the show to begin!

We are super excited about the group of artists involved and we are just electric with the thought that the gallery will soon be filled with factual ladies (in one room) and fictional lades (in the other!).

We are printing a limited edition book that contains all 100+ pieces to accompany the exhibition that will be available for pre-order up through the day of the reception. The books themselves have two 'front' covers and are fully reversible! The books are 21cm x 28.5cm and they're designed to be split in half with one side featuring the factual ladies, and the other the fictional ladies!

In addition to the awesome artwork, the artists have all supplied some really interesting, enlightening and fun to read statements about the women they've chosen. Plus, the center spread contains a comprehensive listing of everyone involved and where you can find more of each artist's work! The whole collection is a great read, and super fun to look through.

If you think you might be interested in picking up a book, we have a pre-order up on the site right now that will ship before the holidays. We want to make sure that interested people can get their books before things get crazy with the season. (We'll also make sure to hold a group of books for the exhibition opening on December 7th for anyone that is local and looking to pick one up.)

Individual giclee prints of each piece in the show will also be listed a week before the opening reception on the site for anyone interested in getting prints for the holidays.

Finally, if you would like one, we're also going to throw in a $5 discount for this week (through OCT 26) for anyone that wants to grab one early. Just type in LOVELYLADIES at checkout. After the 26th they'll be offered for $25.

Thanks so much, everyone, for supporting our shows and for all of your kind words and enthusiasm! We'll keep you posted with pictures and some previews as we go!

For more information on the artists and subjects involved, check out our previous blog post here!

Meet Corrine Kenner

CorrineKenner

Meet Corrine Kenner.
She's a professional Tarot reader, a prolific author, a teacher and she will be joining us as a reader for the Tarot, Mystics and the Occult Exhibition reception on October 26th from 7 - 10 pm.

Corrine is a substantial part of the Twin Cities metaphysical world. She's been praised as one of the best psychics in Minneapolis by Metro Magazine, and has authored over 12 books, a handful of fantastic looking Tarot decks and has had a part as a keynote speaker in many major Tarot conferences around the world.

When I first spoke with Corrine, I was impressed by her calm and up-beat manner. She's incredibly enthusiastic about the subject of Tarot and as we got to talking about the upcoming exhibition, she was wonderfully supportive.

If you get a chance to check out everything that she is up to, please do! Here is a link to her website. Please welcome her when you see her at our event! It should be fantastic! We're so happy to have her joining us!

Last chance to catch the Expletive Show!

Print
J. Zachary Keenan's piece for the Expletive Typography Show

This Friday is your last chance to see the Expletive Show at Light Grey!
It's sad to see it go, but we're so happy to have hosted this amazing group of designers and artists. After months of planning, then installing, then admiring the work, we've grown a bond with the risque and rude work on the walls -- the pieces have become a pleasant backdrop to our daily, profanity laden lives.

I just want to encourage you to stop in and see it before it goes!
We'll be open today and tomorrow until 7pm if you're in the neighborhood and can make it down, otherwise, there's still a chance to see it on the shop.

Here's a link for the curious and appreciative that can't make it to Minneapolis.
The posters are for sale on the shop, so please help us spread the word about them before they're gone!

Hope you get a chance to bond with the pieces as we've been able to!

Thanks for all of your support for this show, we've had a blast!
Artists, you guys are wonderful, and admirers, you guys are awesome.
We've enjoyed this immensely.

** If you've forgotten, or if this is the first you've heard of the show, just be warned that many of them contain offensive and colorful language! :)
