Message In A Bottle Opening Recap

Message In A Bottle Opening Reception
The opening reception for our first show of 2013, Message In A Bottle, took place last Friday night! It was an awesome, mystery-filled event that had visitors searching for clues, decoding messages and enjoying a lot of great art!

Message In A Bottle Opening Reception
It was a noticeably thoughtful and intimate event, very quiet compared to previous openings. Upon walking into the gallery, visitors were directed to a cryptic poem which hinted at secrets hidden in the artwork on the walls. If any vistor could discover all the secrets the clues referred to, they were given a free piece of art to hide in their jackets (to keep it from prying eyes) and clue about the first step of solving a bigger mystery (here's another clue).

Many people took to the task with vigor, although it was a tough nut to crack. In all, only 12 people were able to walk out with the secret piece of artwork.

Message In A Bottle Opening Reception
Message In A Bottle Opening Reception
Part of our goal for Message In A Bottle was to slow people down when viewing art, and make them absorb all of the tiny details. So we were happy to see people scrutinizing every inch of the artwork on display, discussing what they found (or didn't!) with their friends.

The small gallery held a collection of work from featured artist Jackey Batey, including her artist book Running A Secret Society No 20. Alongside that we had 19 pieces from Kali Ciesmier's recent MAKE 2013 workshop. Participants of that workshop each created a piece of art which hid a single letter that, when combined, spelled out a secret message.

And if all that wasn't enough, Danny Saathoff had an amazing interactive piece where each visitor pulled coordinates from a bottle, and left color-coded fingerprints. When filled in completely, it will reveal a hidden... message? Picture? We don't even know, so we're as excited as anyone to see the final result!

Message In A Bottle
You can see how it looked after the opening, it's getting there but there's still more to go! Stop into the gallery to add your mark and finally reveal the hidden message!

If you want to see all the artwork from the show, visit our online store to view or buy any of the amazing work! You can also see all the pictures from the opening in our Message In A Bottle flickr set!

Also, all the artwork will be archived in our visit our online gallery!

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: LIGHT GREY + THE SKETCHBOOK PROJECT

1703Miles_webcallforart
Time to sketch!

CALL FOR ART!

This time we've teamed up with the sketchbook project for a massive, exciting display of all of our stream-of-consciousness, self indulgent and unedited ramblings, doodles, sketches and process!!

This is the first time that we can officially say we can include EVERYONE that submits in the show! We are so excited you don't even know!

So here's how this one will work!

We are the official Minneapolis stop for the 1703 Miles and Back Tour on Sunday, September 22 from 1 - 5pm! The mobile library will be rolling in to the Twin Cities and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR BOOKS WILL BE THERE, ON DISPLAY, FOR EVERYONE TO LOOK AT!!! The books will head out from Minneapolis the next day to finish the tour before finally joining the rest in their library in Brooklyn, NY of over 22,000 sketchbooks from over 130 countries!

In addition to the mobile library, we will be projecting your artwork on our walls for the duration of the month and throwing a reception for a dual exhibition with another soon-to-be announced topic on Friday, September 20th from 7 - 10pm! In addition, we'll be including an online gallery of your work on our site to celebrate all of your awesome work.
So, gear up your sketching materials and join us!

*****

OKAY, so how do you sign up to be a part of our exhibition?
Since this is a special collaborative project, we have a 'call for entries' that is a little different than normal!

In order to be a part of the tour, you have to register in two places.
First, you have to join as part of the 1703 Miles and Back Tour.

Click here to join the tour and get your sketchbook!

Because James from the Sketchbook project was super awesome, he gave us a 20% off discount code:

LIGHTGREY1703

Once you're registered, you just have to put your name down below by June 1st so we know we can count you in like this:

Lindsay Nohl
hello@lightgreyartlab.com

*****

So, once you get your book in the mail all you have to do is read the materials they send you, and then do what you do best: draw in it. The whole exhibition is about the raw, self indulgent and exploratory work! This is a time for you to do things that are unexpected and daring. Do things in that book that you've never given yourself a chance to do before. Practice some things, draw from life, do some hand-lettering, make a flip-book, do whatever it takes to inspire you.

Then,
Scan up to four of your favorite spreads of your sketchbook at 300dpi (jpeg, pdf, psd, tiff, and png are all welcome), fill out the form at the bottom of this blog post and upload them!
The information in the form below gets sent to our dropbox folder, where we'll gather up all of your art and get it ready for the show!
Don't forget to label your artwork with your name like this : lastname_firstname_1.jpg We just need your 4 images at Light Grey by July 1st.

It's probably the easiest thing you can do to be involved.

*****

Don't worry if you can't finish your whole book by July 1st -- we just need 4 of your favorite pieces.
If you need a little bit of extra time to finish your book, you have until August 15th to send it back into the Sketchbook Project in order for it to join the rest of us on the tour!

And that's it!

Thanks guys, we're super excited and happy sketching to you!
We're super excited, so please spread the word! The more the merrier!

Questions? Send us a note at hello(at)lightgreyartlab(dot)com and we'll help!

A New Clue to the Mystery!

Another image sent to me via email. A scroll? What is this, and who is holding it?

I just received a new piece of information regarding the strange, locked section of our site.
This time my anonymous informant is saying that there are only six people involved in the main group from the Message in the Bottle Show.

Does that mean that there is a six-letter password?
Still, I feel like we're getting closer.

What's strange is that I feel like I've even seen some strange things in their recent blog posts...
Maybe that's why they seemed a little out of place...
I'm sure the letters have some connection to each other.

Still, everyone has still been tight-lipped about who is involved.
I am going to try looking through the blogs again and see if I can find letters hidden in the work. I know they couldn't be far.
I have a feeling that's where I might find the clues.

I will keep you posted if we find anything else out.
How strange...

Interview with Tom Cassidy

This week we're hosting a guest performance/lecture by Tom Cassidy, a local artist and expert on mentalism, mail art, slam poetry and linguistics. His fascinating and unusual work has been featured globally, from publications to performances. To get a little taste of what's to come, we asked Tom a few questions about his work and process.
1000 50-61.pmd

Can you share a little bit about your history and involvement with the literary and poetry communities?

I’ve been an active mail-artist since 1970 and have accumulated over 30,000 pieces of correspondence art–pre-zine-culture smallpress, postcards, poems, collages, drawings, pass-&-add sheets, etc. And I’ve been a contributor to dozens of alternative, underground and visual poetry smallpresses, from Modern Correspondence to Popular Reality, from Shavertron (a mostly serious zine based on cult-sci-fi-guy Ray Palmer’s belief that ancient aliens inhabit inner earth) to Joe Bob Brigg’s Drive-In Newsletter, from Lost & Found Times to the Portland Scribe (for which I wrote a column about correspondence art in the 70s). I co-founded the performance poetry troupe The Impossibilists and have shown or read at over one hundred galleries, festivals, bars and colleges; my works have been in over 200 shows blahblahblah (I didn’t participate for a resumé or batting average). I also hosted Open Mics for 25 years and heard over 12000 writers and folksingers as a type of penance.

Podcast: Interview with Jackie Batey

LGAL_podcast_interviewJackieBatey

Dr. Jackie Batey is the founder of Damp Flat Books, where she makes limited-edition, hand-made artist books and zines. Usually run in editions of 10 to 50 Jackie uses her own photography, illustration and hand-drawn type to make wonderful pieces which she also designs, prints and binds.

Jackie also teaches illustration at the University of Portsmouth where she curates an art-zine collection, Zineopolis.

One of Jackie's artist books, Running A Secret Society No 20, caught our eye and really resonated with us as we were planning the Message In A Bottle show, so we invited her to be our featured artist! Jackie is a super interesting person so we wanted to get an opportunity to record a podcast together, and it's a fascinating listen!

Make:2013 Presents Searching For Secrets

It's a week full of secret surprises! As a part of Kali Ciesemier's Resolve to Make: 2013 workshop, each participant was asked to create an illustration. It was a good chance to exercise some of the techniques taught by Kali and to begin a yearful of creative collaboration. The collaborative part is where the secrets come in–aside from creating an illustration that suited the topic of Light Grey Art Lab's current show, Message In A Bottle, each illustrator was also asked to hide a specific letter of the alphabet in his or her piece.

We present to you this gallery of artwork (which has found a permanent home on the Light Grey website) and ask that you try and decode the message! Find the letters, write them down, and voilá! Secret revealed.

A Search for the Truth.

eye
This is an image that was sent to me via email... what does it mean?

There is a rumor going around that some of our members of our Message in a Bottle Exhibition are affiliated with a secret society. We have noticed that our web designer had embedded something weird things in our Message in a Bottle page of our website, but we had overlooked it until today, when I found that there is a hidden section of the site only accessible with a password.

I tried in vain to unlock it, but I think I need to look somewhere else for the clues.

I received a note today in my email from someone tipping me off that some of the artists involved may be quite involved and might know something we don't know. They told me to 'look for the letters that reveal' and that 'the mix of clues will open the passage." They asked to remain anonymous.

I am thinking that I might look and see if I can find any clues in their sites or blogs. I hope I can solve this and see what's going on. I'd like to get to the bottom of this.

If anyone finds anything, let me know.
I'll keep you posted on what we find out and if we see any other clues to who or how this got here. Until then, we'll be looking ourselves.

Good luck.

CALL FOR ART : Macro & Micro

Callforart_macroandmicro_final
Nature!

Hey! We have a new call for art! Finally!

EDIT: Thanks to everyone that submitted links to our Macro & Micro call for art!
The call for art is now closed! We'll be announcing the participants later tonight!
Thanks so much for everyone's support and interest!

There are approximately 3800 known minerals in the earth's crust, an estimated 953 thousand known animal species, and another 215 thousand plant species (not to mention another vast collection of fungi, protozoa and chromista), and the millions of things we haven't discovered yet. We read National Geographic to hear about how twenty-five percent of the life on Earth is beneath the oceans. Tectonic plates creak and crush against each other, the balance of the hydrologic cycle builds and destroys landscapes, and the wind patterns bring unexpected gifts or curses. We are holding a call for art celebrating the intricacies of our earth and all of it's spaces, relationships, weather, surprises and the intricacies of life and the lack-of on a macroscopic or microscopic level.

We are looking for everything from scientific illustrations, to airy, open landscapes. Creatures of modern day, to those from days past. Catalogues of fruit, to a traveler's journal of an antarctic exploration. What does a chinchilla skeleton look like? Symbiotic relationships may inspire you. Adaptations and exceptions or compare and contrast the different pieces of our earth. Editorial images, celebratory, and researched themes are appreciated. We're looking for a collection of artists to show us the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena you can think of and we shall display it proudly!

We will be dividing the gallery into sections, Animal, Vegetable, Mineral and 'Everything Else".

So, put on Radiolab in one ear and watch your David Attenborough documentaries in the other and join us.
If you're interested in joining us all you have to do is put your name, website / portfolio link and email below by February 15th
Along with whether your category of choice ends up as an Animal, Vegetable, Mineral or Everything Else. (This will help us plan the space and the diversity of work so others will see what you are interested in making!)

Example:

hello(@)lightgreyartlab.com
I'd like to be in the Mineral or Everything Else category!

We'll be listing the final group of artists for our show by February 17th on the blog and emailing more information out to everyone after that!

The pieces will be listed on our online gallery, online shop and in our brick and mortar gallery and we shall all celebrate on opening night in Mid-April! More details about dates, deadlines and schedules and everything else will be sent to our final list of artists asap!

This call for art is open to people from all over, so please feel free to tell your friends!
If you have any questions about the theme or the call for art, please send us a note!

And - special hint! We are just putting the finishing touches on a couple other calls for art soon, so keep an eye out!

Make: 2013 With Kali Ciesemier Recap!

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
MAKE:2013 was a huge success! This past weekend we were honored to have the incredibly talented Kali Ciesemier visit us at Light Grey Art Lab to host a weekend workshop dedicated to illustration, creativity and goal-setting, as well as being productive and happy in the new year!

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
As we poured into the small zashiki room at Fuji-ya (our first stop of the weekend), spirits were high and the room bubbled with introductions and animated tales of each person's journey to the Resolve to MAKE: 2013 workshop. Just a few hours prior, we had picked Kali up from the MSP airport. She was surprisingly energetic after a day of traveling and eager to meet everyone that night!

The Light Grey team had spent the last several weeks planning with Kali, and we were excited to finally jump into an intense weekend with our 18 workshoppers!

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
Early Saturday morning we got straight to business with introductions all around. Kali was brave enough to show her impressive progress as a working artist; from her earliest recorded work (an adorable 2nd grade animation made in Kid Pix complete with voice acting and sound effects provided by her and her father), continuing through her semi-awkward teen years (we all have them), and finally wowing everyone with her current and impressive body of work. She passed around plenty of awesome published samples, speaking to how different types of projects created new challenges.

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
Everyone was feeling inspired after seeing so much beautiful work, and we talked a little about trying to figure our what is next for each of us. With 2013 looming ahead, we focused on what was important to us about our own lifestyles and what we look forward to in the future. We broke down where our goals stem from and why they are important to us.

Happiness plays a huge part in our decision making process, and we discussed how it should define what makes the goals we set "Our Goals." We shared our thoughts and plans with each other and using the MAKE: 2013 workbook, we charted a path forward, creating an achievable schedule of action. This plan would shape the rest of our workshop.

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
After a quick lunch of Bánh mì sandwiches and springrolls from local gem Jasmine Deli, we jumped straight into a panel discussion led by Kali that included Brad McGinty, Alyssa Thomas, and Allegra Lockstadt. It was an energetic group with drastically different approaches and methodology, so it was enlightening to see how they had each own carved their own place in the illustration and design world.

It was great to get their perspective on pace, approach, and theories about what is important to them when planning their own goals and growing their own business.

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier

Next, Kali gave a detailed lecture about her ideation and concepting process, which led to an exercise in informal subdivision. This was the first time that many of us had been through this process and it was eye-opening how much it helped create dynamic compositions. She then led everyone through the details of our group project (the results of which can be seen in a special section in the gallery alongside Light Grey Art Lab's upcoming show Message In A Bottle).

As the group began to work on sketches and ideas for their pieces, Kali began one-on-one meetings with each of the artists.

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
That night we hosted an All Creatives Meet & Greet at Cafeteria, where tons of artists, designers, animators and more got together to have some drinks, talk shop, and make some new friends. The private room was packed, loud, and busy, and it was exciting to have so much tallent packed in such a small place.

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold (and the very vocal and rambunctious crowd watching football in the bar next door) and came out to the Meet & Greet!

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
Sunday started out with a roundtable discussion about the business side of illustration. The conversation was freeform, ranging from reps to legal questions to promotion and marketing. Everyone was eager to learn and had questions to ask and personal antidotes to share.

From there Kali led a techniques demo where she showed off her whip-smart process and workflow. Although everyone works in there own way, it was enlightening to see Kali's specific method of illustration. Kali has her technique down to a science and is super

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
Following the demo, the group spent more time working out their sketches for the group project, and Kali continued her one-on-one meetings.

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
During the final discussion of the day, everyone (included Kali and the Light Grey team) shared a personal goal they were set on achieving in 2013. In the end we asked the workshoppers to check in on the progress of their peers and be accountable for each other going forward. It's always easier to stick to a plan when you have a group of friends to cheer you on!

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
As MAKE: 2013 ended with one final group dinner, everyone said their goodbyes and went on their separate ways; hopefully a little more confident in their next steps for 2013.

Make: 2013 with Kali Ciesemier
We want to thank everyone who came to MAKE: 2013! It was amazing group of super talented and wonderful individuals! And of course a special thanks to Kali herself, who did an amazing job leading the workshop and just being a all-around awesome person!

P.S.- If you want to see ALL the pictures from the weekend, take a look at the MAKE: 2013 flickr set.

In the Works

Classes on Happiness, Creativity, and Collaboration

We have been spending a lot of time this week talking about our new goals for 2013, what projects we would like to make happen, and new ways of reaching out to artists. I for one, am blown away with all of the changes and growth that came in 2012, all of the projects, exhibitions, workshops, and partnerships that would not have been possible without the excitement and participation of viewers, artists, friends, and family.

As we begin this new year, we are propelled by the thought of reaching goals, finding happiness, and discoveries new ideas, which has become evident in the themes of our upcoming exhibitions and classes. I would like to spend some time sharing the upcoming events, and how we hope that these will renew a sense of creativity and motivation in all of us.

This past weekend, January 4-6th, Kali Ciesemier led a group of 18 illustrators and designers through a three day workshop focusing on art practice and happiness. The workshop was designed to push each artist to find their own unique needs, desires, and skills as freelance artists- what makes them flourish. It was an intense few days filled with lectures, critiques, and demonstrations led by Kali, individual studio time, group discussions, and guest artists; it was an overall inspiring and productive experience. The workshop will result in a gallery show that will accompany our January exhibition Message In A Bottle.

January 25th marks the opening of Message In A Bottle, an exhibition featuring original paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures exploring the ideas of hidden imagery and codes in art. This show ignites a sense of curiosity and slowness, transforming the audience into the clue masters and masterminds, as they unveil the tiny details and secret components of each work.

Accompanying the Message In A Bottle Exhibition, Lindsay Nohl will be leading a studio course on Codes, Symbols, and Cyphers. This class will explore how we keep secrets, codes and un-code messages; It is about the history and culture of secret keeping. Also, Tom Cassidy, a local poet, language connoisseur, and visual artists will be presenting on Visual Sound: a lecture and performance on slam poetry, stage mentalism, and hidden meaning.

February 1st Light Grey is hosting it's second all-night, work party: The Light Grey Lock-In. This event is near and dear to my heart, because I love the idea of collaboration, talking through ideas, and taking on those rough midnight hours together. It is such a struggle to keep moving on a project when you feel stuck and unsure, so we have created this event as a fun and lighthearted art gathering and studio session.

These are just a few of the immediate events we have on the way. We hope that the beginning of 2013 brings you all happiness and productivity.

Conversation about 2012 and what's next in 2013.

2012refle_2013blogimage
Happy New Year from all of us here at Light Grey Art Lab!

We started the new year off right by running to the airport to pick up Francesca, who was visiting friends and family for the holidays, and headed straight to the gallery to record a podcast!

Jenny, Francesca, Chris and I recorded our year end / year beginning thoughts about what we've learned, things we've loved, and everything we're looking forward to!

We're excited to share our conversation with you, and we're looking forward to a lot more podcasts and downloadable content in 2013! We hope you enjoy it!

2012 Reflections and Looking Forward to 2013
Length: 57:46
Music: As Colorful As Ever by Broke For Free via FMA.
Synopsis: Lindsay, Chris, Francesca and Jenny reflect on Light Grey Art Lab's first nine months, and talk about what's to come. We start with our thoughts on everything that happened in 2012. Then move on to personal and professional goals and plans for 2013. Finally, we wrap up by sharing some details about Light Grey Art Lab's 2013 lineup.

UPDATE: There was some audio distortion around the 35 minute mark, which became pretty unbearable. We had to clip it out, so there's a missing 4 minutes there. During that missing chunk, Jenny mentioned ideas about creating a Light Grey Art Lab Residency, we discussed plans of doing more books and printed collections, we talked about the expirience of seeing a show in person and how the upcoming Message In A Bottle show is about getting people to slow down and scrutinize a piece of artwork. And finally Francesca spoke to incorporating more lectures and events that enhance our making and viewing experience.
